I have a harvest of favorite poems and prose that I will share on my blogs this season.
Every man's life is a fairy tale written by God's fingers."
Hans Christian Anderson
"There is such a place as fairyland-but only children can find the way to it.
And they do not know that it is fairyland until they have grown so old
that they have forgot the way.
One bitter day, when they seek it they realize what they have lost;
and that is the tragedy of life.
On that day the gates of Eden are shut behind them, and the age of gold is over.
Henceforth they must dwell in the common light of common day.
Only a few, who are children at heart, can ever find that fair, lost path again...
They, and only they, can bring us tidings from that dear country where we once sojourned
and from which we must be evermore exiled.
The world calls them its singers and poets and artists and story-tellers;
but they are just people who have never forgotten the way to fairyland."
Lucy Maud Montgomery
"One way to open your eyes is to ask yourself,
'What if I had never seen this before?
What if I knew I would never see it again?'"
Rachel Carson
"
"For every beauty there is an eye somewhere to see it.
For every truth there is an ear to hear it.
For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it."
Ivan Pani
"There is in every true woman's heart a spark of heavenly fire,
which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity;
but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity."
Washington Irvine
We Are Not in Eden Anymore.
"The torrents of ungodliness terrified me...
I called to my God for help;
And He heard my voice out of His temple,
And my cry for help before Him
came into His ears.
Then the earth shook and quaked;
And the foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up out of His nostrils,
And fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down
With thick darkness under His feet.
He rode upon a cherub and flew;
And He sped upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness His hiding place,
His canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
From the brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
He sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and routed them.
Then the channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were laid bare
At Your rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils."
Psalm 18
He's a Wild One
Oh, weary, frail pilgrim, you offer up but milk sop prayers.
Who is this aloof, emotionless other to whom you pray?
Have I ever met him?
I think not, though I have I've heard a name bandied about
as though he is contained in a mere place of worship.
No, He cannot be the same for He is a wild One.
His name strikes terror with stormy sea-green jealous eyes;
the same who snatches my drowning breaths from out my chest;
He is the same who swats men's treasures and bodies into broken toothpicks and bones,
where deep calls to deep.
He is the same whose finger twirls roaring hurricanes
into a twisting force of mighty wind and water.
He is the One whose very voice shatters rocks casting them crashing down from great heights.
He is the One whose heels are dipped in burning embers to dance across parched mountain tops
during the direst drought leaving cloven tongues of fire as
the sparks fly upward while dry lightning falls.
No, weak, weary pilgrim, I have not heard the name of the one
to whom your tepid prayers are sent.
No, the One who terrorizes my soul causes my heart to fail until I fall at His feet.
He is the One who hates sin with an all consuming white-heat passion
which drew blood, the blood of His Son.
He will roll over and die n'er again.
His patience is stretched to snapping.
So say your rote words, you who think you have heard His voice,
but are in fact lukewarm, in danger of being spit out His mouth.
He's a wild One, untamed.
He laid down His life once, but nevermore.
Hear Him roar.
Lord have mercy.
