"For in this way in former times the holy women also,
who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves,
being submissive to their own husbands.
Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord,
and you have become her children
if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear."
I Peter 3:5-6
"holy women who hoped in God"
We have to ask ourselves, who are we dressing to please? This is the bottom line of our fashion choices. These holy women were motivated by not just being submissive to their own husbands, but in being pleasing to God. It affected how they dressed, not shaming their husbands in public or desiring to attract someone other than their husband.
Adam Clarke said, "Simplicity reigned in primitive times...Trade and commerce brought in luxuries; and luxury brought pride, and all the nonsense of dress. No female head ever looks so well as when adorned with it own hair alone. This is the ornament appointed by God. To cut it off or to cover it is an unnatural practice...The women who trust not in God are fond of dress and frippery; those who trust in God follow nature and common sense. It will rarely be found that women who are fond of dress, and extravagant in it, have any subjection to their husbands...Indeed, their dress, which they intend as an attractive to the eyes of others, is a sufficient proof that they have neither love nor respect for their own husbands."
Just as Abraham is considered the father figure of our faith, so too Sarah is considered the mother figure of our faith. (But we have to overlook the whole episode of Hagar, Sarah's handmaid who she put forward for her husband to have an affair with in order to produce an offspring when she gave up on God's promise to her. This was the beginning of the genealogy of Arabs, who also consider Abraham in their ancestry. Likewise, this is the beginning of the Jewish-Arab hatred and war since this BC time.) Sarah, nevertheless is to be respected as the "First Lady" of faith. She earned my respect since, after all, she had a baby during her extreme old age and named him Laughter. You might even say that our model of fashion is set by a ninety-year old pregnant woman.
Finally, "you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear." Adam Clarke says concerning this, "If ye do well, and act conscientiously your part as faithful wives, ye will at no time live under the distressing apprehension of being found out, or terrified at every appearance of the discovery of infidelities, or improper conduct. Being not guilty of these, you will not have occasion to fear detection."
John Wesley's standard of holy women who trusted God is framed in these words: "therefore did not act thus from servile fear, was...their quiet spirit, not afraid or amazed; and their unblamable behaviour, doing all things well."
In our society, you just have to look around at the indecent manner in which many women brazenly dress. Who are they trying to attract? Be not afraid, for being a holy woman is infinitely more attractive.
